SAVE THE DATES: Dream Camp April 30-May 3 & Sleep Summit Oct. 8-11, 2024

Adventures of Mattman: What Does It Take To Wake You?

I want to start out with a shoutout from one superhero to others: Dreams 4 All of Lake Norman Charlotte rescued 22 mattresses and donated them to people in September!

Shout out to the Pinehurst team with Corey Lane coming in with a big save of donated beds from Tempur-Pedic! Recipients included homeless veterans that were approved for housing and Venezualen refugees. Great job Dream Makers!

Each mattress donated is a huge number of sleep cycles saved! Including mine. Dreams 4 All believe nobody deserves to sleep on the floor.

If you are interested in making a monetary contribution to save somebody’s sleep cycles or to inquire about joining the fight in your local area, please text me at 704-706-2436. We are always looking for new superheroes to join our ranks!

We’re getting on to the end of the year. Between Greg Law and myself, we call this the fourth quarter full-court press!

Between Greg and Katy Law, owners of Sweet Dreams Mattress & Furniture, and myself, we are big fans of Ed Mylette, and he refers to this as the separation season. It’s that time of year when people tend to rest on their laurels. If only I could convince those people to rest in their beds at night instead!

The holidays are coming up and the year will come to an end. New year’s resolutions are coming for those who seek change in their lives by using the sun as their metric of time. I will make some resolutions myself!

I’ve achieved two out of three of mine this year. I learned to sew! Accent pillows, capes, customizing top sheets to fitted sheets, you name it! Sewing isn’t that hard when you have a sewing machine. The machine does all the work!

And I also had my best year of performance in 5ks. Even if I didn’t get the sub 30-minute 5k in the Mattsuit, I ran sub 30 on my own more than once. Improving is enough for me and I don’t intend to stop the habits that got me this far. Instead, I will make new goals to add more habits to do even more!

So if you are like me, why wait until the new year to start trying? I see so many people sleepwalking through their days. They’re literally zombies. And so I ask you a very important question. What’s it going to take to wake you up?

I want you to think about this. Especially if you are the type of person to hit the snooze button every day. When that alarm goes off and you smash the snooze, there comes a point in time where you either choose to get out of bed or be late.

Whether you realize that time has come and gone or not makes a huge difference to your energy as you get out of bed.

If you’re going to be late, you jump up and frantically get yourself ready. It’s a whirlwind and often mistakes are made. Often details are missed. Some appointments are forgiving, while others are not.

So now, I will ask again but this time I’m talking to you about other important things like diet and exercise. What is it going to take to wake you up?

Your body is great at sending signals that we snooze. Something hurts here or I lack energy there. Snooze. Move on. And eventually, you’ll get a wake-up call. We have all gotten one from a doctor, a friend, or a family member. Sometimes these calls are forgiving and you get a second chance. Sometimes these calls are not and the results are life-altering.

And now I’ll ask one last time. This time I’m talking to you about the important things you want to achieve in your lifetime. What is it going to take to wake you up?

If you are not driven, here is a way to find your purpose. Take a moment and begin with the end in mind.

Although this is morbid, picture your funeral and the people who will attend. Listen to the things you would hope for those people to say. Write those things down. Now every night you go to bed, you get another shot at making those things a reality.

To become that person and do those things could require change and inconvenience. Growing as a person is not easy to do, but it is easiest to do when you are not exhausted.

Don’t turn out like me. I got lucky. My wake-up call was a blood clot in my left femur. It resulted in a year and a half of intense pain. And again, I got lucky.

They replaced my hip, the surgery went the best it could, and here I am. I could choose to go on as my former self, which means I am at risk to replace my other hip at some point. Or I can do things every day that reduce my risk.

By focusing on my sleep habits first, I am able to tackle the challenges of mastering diet and exercise in order to be in the best shape of my life.  But it took a really awful year of intense pain to get me here. Don’t let this be you!

If you are looking for the best resources to learn how to overhaul your sleep and your nutrition, I highly recommend Shawn Stevenson’s Sleep Smarter & Eat Smarter. It is amazing how better sleep can positively impact your life.

Don’t hit the snooze button for your body. Those alarms are going off for a reason. It’s not always easy to tell why they sound off or what they sound off for.

But if you snooze it with a supplement or ignore it altogether, at some point you will pass that moment where you are officially late and there are real consequences.

Instead, start learning how to sleep like a superhero! Save your own sleep cycles first and from there, you will begin to live fully wide awake.
