Adventures of Mattman: Election Cycles Vs. Sleep Cycles

We are headed into the fall and winter seasons of 2022, and wouldn’t you know it, midterm elections are on the horizon.

I am not here to talk about politics or convince you to vote one way or the other. What keeps me up at night is the stress the election cycles create. The election cycle steals from your sleep cycles. But it doesn’t have to!

These sleep cycles are being stolen by Miss Information and her pet energy vampires. Miss Information is responsible for a lot of negativity on the internet. Her pet energy vampires feed their negativity by leeching your positivity. Don’t be a victim! I’ll give you three ways to protect yourself.

  • Step 1: Put your phone away and avoid news media at least 30 minutes before bed. Good news does not come in late, and bright screens stop your body from producing melatonin.

    Melatonin is the hormone that is responsible for you falling asleep! If the last thing your brain experiences is negativity before you go to sleep, don’t expect positive results.
  • Step 2: Lay off the doomscrolling! If you don’t know what doomscrolling is, google it! If your Facebook or Instagram feed is littered with negativity, you need to click unfollow! Those posts are energy vampires! They feed their negativity by absorbing your positivity!

  • Step 3: While the last election season was rife with conflict between political parties online, and in person, I saw a different narrative. If the news and social media have got you down, seek out a way to connect with people in your community!

    The drama of politics online can make it seem like there is no way we can live side by side. In reality, we do every day and we all share many overlapping values to help one another. There are lots of non-profit organizations and groups you can join. I joined Exchange Club and Kiwanis and I no longer buy into the division. I am aware it is there but I can also see the good we can accomplish together.

Now this upcoming midterm election — holy cow. I assume like any election cycle, we’ll see a ton of ads on TV, on the internet, and hear them on the radio. I imagine many people will see social media posts meant to rile us up.

These posts are often made by energy vampires. They’re looking to infect you. When you get bit by a vampire, there is a chance you become one too! 

I hope talking about this helps you identify the difference between things you can control versus the things we cannot.

I focus on my evening and morning routines first and foremost. While the world seems like it’s coming crashing down, it’s only worse if I wake up exhausted and have to deal with it. 

Don’t let Miss Information and her pet energy vampires leech your positivity this election cycle. You need all the energy and momentum you can get!
